out of utter boredom fired up my hulk ultra 350mw green laser from dragonlasers.com. burned some holes in a floppy diskette (don’t even know where that obsolete magnetic data storage medium came from). shot a short segment. so put on your safety goggles and enjoy:

Eeeasy Eee PC Backup November 17, 2008

a while back i wrote about how easy it is to restore an eee pc to factory defaults if you screw up as i had done on several occasions. the previous method of restoring an eee would blast everything you installed, configured, customized, and updated straight to oblivion. so what you might want to do in order to avoid starting from scratch is to backup the internal ssd drive before making major changes. the simplest method that i found so far for doing just that is to download this utility which creates a bootable usb stick or an sd card containing the backup program that let’s you create a full or partial disk backup.

be careful not to store your backups on the internal eee pc drive; and don’t do a restore unless you’re prepared to lose any changes made to the target drive since the last backup.

for a step-by-step instructions read the eeeuser.com wiki page “back-up for the eee pc with xandros“, where i found out about this easy way to backup without messing with the console, which is usually what creates the need to restore (at least in my case). the good thing is, now when i fubar my eee, i won’t have to pound the f9 key like a maniac at boot time.

i’m no economist or a particularly learned man, but it looks as though we’re facing an economic crisis the likes of which i’ve never witnessed this side of the pond. i found that by following the path of least resistance, it makes it easier to slide down the inevitable downward spiral. so i guess that means, it’s hobo time again! i wonder what it would be like this time around? riding the rails, eating ramen noodles, ramen_noodlesnot showering…i pretty much got that down already so it shouldn’t be too much of an adjustment for me. there will be just more of us doing the whole modern hobo thing. so keep it on the bright side, stay the course, etc… it may not be good, but great depression!

mmm, chili caliente!

as the title suggests, it’s election time…again…here for us in the good old us of a. seems like the last 2 didn’t work out 4 the better, according 2 sum. imao, things went according to architects’ plans which worked out wonderfully for engineers, who did one heck of a job. it was a triumph of epic proportions: “mission accomplished” indeed! will this time be any different? probably not. but does it really matter?

now i don’t have anything against the seti@home project, but if i learned anything from south park it’s that the aliens are not always friendly and will occasionally stick a probe where the sun don’t shine. so why not harness the often underutilized power of our computers and do something worthwhile with it? consider joining the folding@home project, which imho is much more productive, meaningful and much less painful than seti’s. all you have to do is download a client or several depending on the number of computers you have (i’m currently running 3 clients on my home network) and let it do its thing. if you have more than 1 client running, for convenience you can use a tool like fahmon to monitor their status. but why fold, one may ask? the answer is best summarized in folding@home faq whence the following quote comes:

the folding@home project (fah) is dedicated to understanding protein folding, the diseases that result from protein misfolding and aggregation, and novel computational ways to develop new drugs in general

so don’t analyze those space signals of “stick this alien probe up my bum” variety (unless it’s your cup of tea), instead give fah a try. being a loyal minion, i am of course folding for the dawn and drew team.
